Saturday 2nd May

Up at 5:30 AM and started getting organised. No shower or shave-too difficult!

It is just on 8:30 AM so only 40 minutes before we are due in Perth.

Good breakfast again! Sat with Taffy and Pat… . What an interesting couple! Both are biochemists. He is 82, and she is a similar age, and they are going to drive across the Tanami. He is only tiny and so is she-pretty game!! He has only recently realised what a bunch of immoral people there are in the pharmaceutical industry.

A slow trip into Perth at first because the train goes through a mountainous area-not very high but the line cuts through the mountains and it is winding and slow. Once we got onto the flats it became quicker.

It’s a beautiful day outside but it could be cold.

We arrived on time but the IP station is a few kilometres out of town. Glad to be off the train as the single room is so restricting. Brendan and I caught a local train-he to Fremantle and me to Miss Maud’s hotel in Perth CBD. Had to find my way to the hotel but I was there within 15 minutes which was about 10 AM. Not allowed into a room but I was allowed to leave my luggage there.

I walked down to Barrack Street wharf but no boats at that time going to Rottnest Island so I decided to just take the boat to Fremantle and have a look around. I had to wait till 11 AM and then we were off. It’s a beautiful day and a very pleasant trip-very knowledgeable skipper who talked for almost the entire trip. I didn’t realise how big the Swan River is. It took 1 ¼ hours to get to Fremantle. The Sun Princess was docked near where we were to disembark. I left it too late on the boat to go to the toilet. I couldn’t find a public toilet, so I found an hotel, went in and there was Brendan- he had checked into the local youth hostel and was waiting to move in. I had my comfort stop and then we had a beer. After the 1st one we decided to move to another pub to try something different.

Not knowing where to go we followed the crowd and found an area with a couple of pubs and a lot of coffee shops. These were crowded-I suppose the Sun Princess crowd helped. We chose a pub that was a little bit away from the crowd and continued our drinking.

After three beers we split up as Brendan had to get back and check into the youth hostel and he didn’t want to miss out on a bed. I went and got a Subway for lunch and just as I finished eating Brendan walked past looking for an ATM.

I caught the Cat which is a free bus service around the Fremantle CBD. The stupid woman driver kept closing the centre door on people trying to get on board and then closing it on them when they tried to go into the front. I got a bruised wrist from this performance. This is a free service so it is hard to imagine why she wouldn’t let people on via the centre door. My only bad personal experience so far. I didn’t do the full circuit but got off and walked to the very big modern hotel that Miri and I had looked at previously. I bashed my watch against the door and it fell off-the pin came out of the band. I was lucky to find the pin. A jeweller put it together for me free of charge which made up for the stupid Cat driver.

I wandered around Fremantle a bit more and got some toothpaste and toothbrushes from the local Coles supermarket-I have not put these into my luggage as I had been told they would be included in the Indian Pacific toiletries bag. They weren’t!

I caught the local train back to Fremantle and walked back to the hotel and checked in. A very nice room-very big compared to my room in Adelaide and about 10 times bigger than the cabin on the Indian Pacific. The shower was huge which was a relief.

The hotel lift is still an original where you open the doors yourself to get it to work. Staff not really helpful-but I suspect that is Perth. I’m entitled to a smorgasbord breakfast but because I leave so early I have to get breakfast delivered but it is just a continental one.

Did some washing and battery charging and now I’m out having a drink and writing this while I have a beer. Then I will go looking for a reasonable meal.

Walked to Northbridge. Prices here are very high. Settled for Cheesy Nachos at The Brass Monkey Pub- $10.50 plus a pint of Little Creatures Pale Ale $9. Huge plate of nachos and it took a long time to eat. I went for a 2nd beer, hoping that no one would take away my unfinished meal.
I got back to the hotel about 8:10 PM and did some organising-watched the first part of the Bill after washing socks and undies. My watch fell apart again when I started washing, so put everything into a plastic bag-I’ll try another jeweller somewhere else. Kept falling asleep so shower and asleep by 9:45 PM

Friday first of May 2009

I got up a couple of times in the night-got dressed at 6 AM and Penny bought coffee at 6:40. I went down to the Explorer lounge and took some photos etc before the crowd arrived before brekkie at 7 AM.

I sat with Brendan again. Good brekkie-after which we sat in the lounge and talked.

It is now 9:25 AM. I thought I would sleep last night but very restless. The cabins are so small! You understand why you can’t take suitcases to the cabin. Hanging space and storage are all miniature. The room is very very tired and needs a complete refurbishment- a lot of rattles etc. When the bed is down the door only opens about a third of the usual way so have to squeeze in and out

An announcement told us we were now entering the Nullarbor proper-and the landscape changed dramatically.

Before this there were plenty of gum trees and scrub and small hillocks etc. Then it became flat and treeless. No wildlife evident.

There are regularly spaced solar panels and sheds-presumably these power the radio towers as there is mobile reception every so often on the train.

At 10 AM we stopped for 30 minutes at Cook-now just a refuelling place. Five people live here to do the refuelling of the train etc plus they have a souvenir shop. I got myself a certificate. Got a photo of the train and myself also.

The plain is so flat you feel you can see the curvature of the earth.

We crossed the Western Australian border at 11:49 Central Time. There is a sign “Welcome to WA”. However the train stays on Central Time until Kalgoorlie.

1:10 back from lunch-small but good. Finally saw some birds but we are going so fast it is hard to work out what they are.

I made a list of the animals and the times I saw them.

Birds nests on most of the radio towers

1:24 PM 2 hawks

2:15 PM we came to the end of the 478 km straight stretch the longest straight stretch of railway line in the world

2:49 PM 3 cows

3:00 PM 2 black birds-crows?

3:08 PM more small trees appearing now

3:11 PM 2 kangaroos

3:19 PM 1 very small bird

3:20 PM 10+ birds

3:25 PM Rawlinna Village

3:32 PM 2 birds

3:42 PM pair of crows

3:44 PM jackpot a pair of wedge tail eagles.

Trees are now increasing in numbers

3:50 PM 2 windmills

3:54 PM small flock of birds

3:55 PM a small bird defending itself against a bigger bird

3:56 PM 1 rabbit

4 PM another weggie

I thought I would be bored just sitting in my room looking out the windows but as you can see from above there seems to be something happening all the time.

I took a lot of photos as we were moving-and I’m surprised at how well they have come out. Some were taken on zoom but all were when we were really moving along.

I had a beer or two at the lounge with Brendan and some others before dinner. Peter  joined us for dinner-good conversation about Winston Churchill and World War 2 and genealogy.

I went back to my cabin as we would be getting off at Kalgoorlie when we arrived there. We had a 40 minute stop for refuelling before we got to Kalgoorlie and it was quite boring just sitting in the dark not knowing what was happening as there was no announcement.

Finally we arrived at Kalgoorlie and Brendan and I walked into town. Peter F asked us for assistance-he showed us Paddy Hannan’s statue where you get a drink. He headed back to the train by himself-he didn’t want to go to a pub.

We looked in a couple of the pubs and had a pint each at the Exchange. Very friendly crowd. We drank Boags pints-imperial pints. Excitement when a young female stormed into the bar and attacked another barmaid. Bedlam! But a good laugh even if it was real.

Next we went across the corner to another pub . West End lager-terrible!

We stopped at Judd’s Hotel & Bar on the way to the train and had two more beers. No TVs, but a huge crowd. They were mainly young people, mid-20s to mid-30s it appeared. We started with Little Creatures Pale Ale- a very different taste-sort of sweet. I enjoyed it but Brendan didn’t so I got him a Boags for our second drink.

Back to the train-we were nearly the last to board-but my bed was not made up. Had to find a staff member but none available except the bloke letting us back on the train-he fixed it for me as I had no idea how to pull the bed down.

I had to wait till after 10:45 PM before going to the toilet as they are locked until we started moving again.

Adelaide

This is a bit out of sequence, but I wanted to get my impressions into writing before I forget too much.
My plane-Virgin Blue-arrived on time, really a few minutes early.
We landed 12 minutes early and I was out and on a bus within 30 mins. Bags came fairly quickly and no damage, but I was using the duffle bag I got for $19 from Aldi so no hard sides to damage. Adelaide airport is new and big and only a few kms from the centre of the city. We landed from the sea side.
Found the Jet bus stop and bus came within a few mins. I thought it was just an airport bus but it is a regular commuter bus so within a couple of stops it was full. I had put my duffle-with a lot of effort-into a bag rack. Cost $2.60 –I forgot to ask for Senior rate.
The driver told me when to get off and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to haul the bag out so asked a really tall guy-“you look pretty strong, could you get my bag please”. He did but not very graciously.
Followed the driver’s directions and trundled down to North Terrace and soon found the Mercure.
It was just on 10am when I got to reception-I had sent an email asking if I could leave my bags at this time, but there was a really helpful bloke on reception, and he found me a room and allowed me to check in immediately-that was a huge relief. I was able to sort of relax, clean up and get my backpack better organised.
There is a tram stop just in front of the hotel so got a tram to Glenelg within a few minutes. The system in Adelaide is that any ride just within the CBD is free and you pay if you go out of that area. Trams are good but the seats are very hard. Conductor comes around when tram leaves CBD area-this time I got seniors rate $1.20.

Observations
Adelaide people are very friendly & helpful- no matter who I asked I got polite assistance. Might be the grey hair and age-but it was a pleasant surprise.
There is a very big coffee culture here.
Enjoyed wandering Glenelg. Went to the end of the jetty and back and then wandered the streets. There are still a lot of awnings over the footpaths with supports which give it a real old time feel. I love that as I don’t like all the modern architecture of east coast cities. Wandered right along the main street. By this time I was starting to fade so decided to go back to the hotel and have a siesta. The trams come every 15 mins so soon on my way back.
Good to lie down even for a short time. The room is very modern but quite small and I seemed to fill it up easily.
I had seen a Ti just around the corner from the tram, so decided to go there and get more info. Very helpful young bloke got on his computer & found the bus stop I needed tomorrow to get to the Brewery. Got some more information and brochures and then began to follow the 3 hour walk around Adelaide I had printed.
A lot of the places are buildings and churches so just observed from outside. Came across the YHA-it is in a very good position
The toenail on my little right toe was hurting & I had forgotten to put in scissors. Bright idea-get some emery boards and file all nails. I was wandering the Rundle Mall and came across a big woolies. Got some strange looks from women as I was searching through the make up isles. Asked a girl if I was in the right spot and she showed me where they were.
I wanted to see some of the places I would be staying at when I returned. The Austral is on a corner and looks great from the outside and the bars have not been modernised.
Overall impression is-I would readily come back anytime to Adelaide.

Perth to Fremantle

The Indian Pacific arrived on time-9.10am on Saturday and I was at my hotel in Perth by 10am. No luck in getting into a room but was able to leave luggage. Walked down to Barrack St wharf and got a ticket on the 11am ferry to Fremantle-$20 which I thought was expensive.
I have been to Perth before but had never been on the Swan to Fremantle. I was very surprised at how big the river is as you leave the wharf. The views were great and the Captain gave a good commentary. We passed at least 4 sailing clubs during the 1 1/4 hour trip, ranging from the “local” to the very expensive. The trip takes so long because the ferry can’t go more than 6 knots. So, even though it was expensive, I’m glad I did the trip and would recommend it. I had really wanted to get to Rottnest Island, but all those ferries leave Perth about 8.30am.
I enjoyed wandering Fremantle, even got the CAT-free local bus service around the town and then got the train back to Perth.

Indian Pacific from Adelaide to Perth

June 1, 2009 at 7:20 am | In The BIG Trip | Leave a Comment

I took the Indian Pacific from Adelaide to Perth. Gold Class no less-but only because there was a “special” for Pensioners. The special really didn’t save much because the company demanded that you buy 2 nights accommodation in Perth and/or Adelaide at full price. If I could have booked my own accommodation at YHAs or lower standard accommodation I would have saved a lot.
I would NOT advise anyone to go in the single cabins in Gold Class. They are OK during the day, but at night when the bed is put down you have very little room to move.
Your door opens only about 1/3rd way which makes it very difficult to get in and out of the cabin. The bunks are very narrow also.
However the dining facilities and meals were very good, and the Lounge car a good place to meet others.
The company is also missing out on a feature that the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada has-an outside observation area with no glass to interfere with photography. Possibly not allowed by our every protective government bureaucrats.

Report

May 28, 2009 at 5:48 am | In The BIG Trip | Leave a Comment

Well I’ve been back from the trip now for nearly 2 weeks and finally caught up with things here.
The trip?
I flew from Brisbane to Adelaide, caught the Indian Pacific to Perth, then a 9 day camping trip from Perth back to Adelaide, a few days in Adelaide and then home.
17 days all up and what a great lot of memories.
I’m going to break this up into small daily doses so you don’t get bored.
My trip started at 2am on Wed 29th April when I had to be up, packed, and trundle my bag up a hill to meet the Door2Door coach to take me to Brisbane airport.
I suppose I’m like most people-hoping that the bus company will be efficient and not forget me-but no worries-bus was there at 3.10am as promised.
This time had seemed too early to me to be picked up as my flight didn’t leave until 6.30am, but the driver had quite a few pickups around the Gold Coast and it was after 4am before we actually headed to the airport.
I was travelling on Virgin Blue and had done seat allocation yesterday so I was expecting a quick check-in. I couldn’t believe how many people were before me in the Virgin line-there must have been a number of flights leaving early.
Got thru the line reasonably quickly and then off to the security.
Once again I got stopped and had to take off my shoes-I wear Rockports for walking and these shoes have a metal [iece in the sole for support, so I know that my chances of getting thru the security is usually pretty small. Once thru I found a place to eat the sandwiches I had made for breakfast and after a wander around the terminal I settled down to wait.

Plans

April 28, 2009 at 5:10 am | In The BIG Trip | Leave a Comment

28th April
Tomorrow I leave on a trip that will take me completely out of my comfort zone.
I have been very busy the last 10 days as I had a stall at a Seniors Health & Lifestyle Expo plus packing etc for my trip.
I will be taking more trips in future in this same manner-don’t warn businesses that I am coming and then report my unbiased opinions via my websites & blog.
Hence I am not telling you where I am going.
I’ll be back on deck on 16th May.
